Sharing the fact that you were raped — on a T-shirt — should. just. not. ever. happen.
And Jennifer “feminist activist” Baumgardner should not be “distributing” *pink* T-shirts with a small note sitting in a safe that declares in handwriting, “I was raped.”
What’s next? Claiming to be raped as a badge of honor or coolness?
“By having an object like this … that’s so mundane, it sort of forces it into everyday conversation,” Baumgardner told The New York Times.
Gee. Ya think?
“I do think it’s often empowering for women and men to own that experience and divest themselves of some of the shame and secrecy of it — and realize that they’re not the ones that should be ashamed,” she continues.
You’re right, Baumgardner. Women who have been raped — whether it was a date rape, a “gray” rape or a straight-up gang bang — definitely shouldn’t be ashamed. But you should: for capitalizing on one of the most humiliating and degrading experiences a woman can go through — especially since you’ve never been through it yourself.
It’s not clear from the article if she’s officially making money from her latest enterprise. But she’s certainly getting some fancy press from the paper of record.
